SUMMARY:Speaker Series: David Hume and the Culture Wars
DESCRIPTION:Join the LWV Moscow for a Speaker Series event\, David Hume and the Culture Wars\, presented by Joseph Campbell on Wed.\, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m. in the 1912 Center Arts Workshop. \nDavid Hume (1711–1776)\, a leading voice of the Scottish Enlightenment and friend of Adam Smith\, has something to say about today’s culture wars. He distinguishes two models of knowledge: math and science. Value judgments don’t fit neatly into either model\, which is why disputes over morality\, politics\, and society so often feel endless. Hume not only helps explain this problem but also points to a better way of understanding values and debates about value judgments. \nJoseph Campbell recently retired as Professor from Washington State University after teaching at WSU for 26 years. His interests include free will\, political liberty\, skepticism\, and the philosophy of David Hume. Campbell was the recipient of WSU’s Marion E. Smith Faculty Achievement Award (2005) as well as the Honors Thesis Advisor Award (2006). This fall\, he will publish his 10th co-edited book volume.

SUMMARY:Repair Cafe at the 1912 Center
DESCRIPTION:Community members are invited to bring their broken objects and a can-do spirit to the Moscow Public Library’s Repair Café on Sunday\, July 13 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the 1912 Center\, located at 412 East Third Street. \nVolunteer experts will share their skills with visitors to repair books\, clothing and textiles\, jewelry\, small household appliances\, toys\, and other items. In addition\, there will be a station for knife and scissor sharpening\, with a two item limit. There will also be a gluing station with a variety of glues. Light refreshments will be provided. There is no guarantee that items will be fully repaired. Attendees bring items at their own risk. \nThe Repair Café movement started in the Netherlands in 2009 with the goals of reducing waste\, teaching participants practical repair skills\, and fostering a new appreciation for old possessions. \nFunding for this program is provided by the Friends of the Moscow Library. This program is free and open to the public. \nSunday\, July 13\, 1:00 – 4:00 PM

DESCRIPTION:The Latah County Human Rights Task Force and Latah County Historical Society are co-sponsoring a Living Voices performance\, “Fly For Freedom: Home Front / War Front\,” at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, April 23\, in the 1912 Center’s Lecompte Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public. This Living Voices performance will combine a dynamic solo performance by Ayo Tushinde with archival film to transform history into a moving\, personal journey. \n“Fly For Freedom” celebrates the unsung heroes of World War II as it deals with the questions: who were the real “Rosie the Riveters?” and how did Black Americans fight for democracy on two fronts? The story focuses on Antoinette and her family who join the millions of Black Americans serving their country in the defense industries while bravely confronting racism\, sexism and fascism on every front. \nThis program was developed in partnership with the Museum of Flight\, Museum of History & Industry and The Boeing Company.

Limited admission is $40\, with tickets capped at 150 attendees. Each ticket includes a commemorative glass and 4 drink tickets\, with additional drink tickets available for purchase at the event. Please note that this is a 21+ event. This venue has limited capacity\, so no entrance will be allowed for non-ticket holders.

SUMMARY:Repair Cafe at the Moscow Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Community members are invited to bring their broken objects and a can-do spirit to the Moscow Public Library’s Repair Café on Sunday\, April 13 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the 1912 Center\, located at 412 East Third Street. \nVolunteer experts will share their skills with visitors to repair books\, clothing and textiles\, jewelry\, small household appliances\, toys\, and other items. In addition\, there will be a station for knife and scissor sharpening\, with a two item limit. There will also be a gluing station with a variety of glues. Light refreshments will be provided. There is no guarantee that items will be fully repaired. Attendees bring items at their own risk. \nThe Repair Café movement started in the Netherlands in 2009 with the goals of reducing waste\, teaching participants practical repair skills\, and fostering a new appreciation for old possessions. \nFunding for this program is provided by the Friends of the Moscow Library. This program is free and open to the public.

Kaylee Peterson\, recent candidate for Idaho US Representative will also speak.
